Pleasantly Surprised By True Blood

true blood

It all started on a rainy day with nothing to watch on TV. Every television show was on a break (yes another one) which seems to happen more and more these days. A friend on Facebook raved about True Blood and informed everyone she was catching up on all the episodes she had missed. I had never heard about True Blood so I looked it up. Uhhhhh. Another vampire show. Vampire shows and movies are all the rage right now and quite frankly I’m sick of it. Boredom set in and I decided to rent the first season. I am all about giving television shows a shot. That is actually how I’ve found my absolute favorite shows that ordinarily I would not have given a chance. I was bracing myself for fake blood, people biting each other and cheesy romance. I was pleasantly surprised and immediately fascinated. True Blood turned out to be an unexpectedly amazing TV show that immediately consumed every moment I had trying to catch up on what I had missed out on.

True Blood, based on The Southern Vampire Mysteries by Charlaine Harris, revolves around the main character Sookie Stackhouse who is a telepath and a waitress in Bon Temps which is a fictional town in Louisiana. Sookie Stackhouse is this quirky, naive character who ends up badly beaten one fateful night. In steps Bill, a vampire who saves her life by letting her drink his blood which has healing powers. Immediately she’s fascinated by him and slowly falls in love.

True Blood is based on a fictional world where vampires have come out of the closet so to speak and are co-existing with humans because of a drink the Japanese invented named True Blood which is synthetic blood. This invention allows vampires to no longer have to feed on humans which then allows them to be able to live among humans in the evening.

I’ll admit True Blood is not for everyone. If you’re expecting your typical vampire show then you may be disappointed. There’s full nudity at times, it’s dark and evil at times but absolutely hilarious at other times. If what you’re wanting is cheesy vampire scenes and fake blood then prepare to be disappointed because this show is totally different and that’s why I love it. Expect the unexpected!

True Blood has wrapped up its third season and has been renewed for a fourth which is set to air on June 26th 2011 so please rent the first three seasons and give it a shot. You will not be disappointed.
